'Cruel' electric shock collars banned in England
In an ‘historic moment for animal welfare’, The Kennel Club has welcomed news
that the Government has laid down legislation which will completely ban the use
of remote controlled electric shock collars in England, as of 1 February 2024,
following a ten year campaign to #BanShockCollars. The Regulations can be found
at The Animal Welfare (Electronic Collars) (England) Regulations 2023
(legislation.gov.uk)
Electric shock collars deliver an electric shock to a dog’s neck via a remote control,
up to a radius of two miles – meaning a dog not within sight of its owner could still
be shocked – and for up to 11 seconds at a time. With five per cent of dog owners
reportedly using electric shock collars, a complete ban on their use across the UK
should mean half a million dogs will be saved from being trained by these highly
aversive devices.
Further information about The Kennel Club’s campaign to ban electric shock collars
can be found by visiting The Kennel Club website.
However, The Kennel Club has heard that Defra has been
strongly lobbied by the pro-shock collar contingency,
and that as yet there has been no date set for the final stage of these important
Regulations to pass. The Kennel Club is asking supporters of a ban to take action to
ensure it gets through.
The KCC has provided a template letter (see final page of newsletter) that you can
tweak and use, or fill in the blanks, and copy and paste. It contains instructions of
where to send it and highlights where to fill in gaps and tells you what to Tweet.
The Kennel Club is worried that if we don’t get as many people as possible
expressing their concern, we might lose this ban come next year which would be
absolutely devastating for dog welfare.
Thank you for your support.
